Ghana Premier League: Heart of Lions seek home revival as Berekum Chelsea chase first away points

Heart of Lions will be determined to return to winning ways when they host Berekum Chelsea at the Kpando Stadium on Saturday in a Matchday Seven fixture of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League.

The Kpando-based side will enter the encounter looking to bounce back from a 3-1 defeat to defending champions Medeama SC in Tarkwa, a result that brought their two-match winning streak to an end.

Before that setback, Lions had recorded victories over Young Apostles and FC AshantiGold 04, results that had boosted their confidence and improved their position in the league standings.

The defeat to Medeama has left Heart of Lions in 11th place with eight points, making Saturday’s fixture an important opportunity to get their campaign back on track.

Head coach Kasim Gokyildiz believes his team can learn from the loss but insists that defensive mistakes must be eliminated if they are to secure better results.

“We have only to avoid our own mistakes. So we have to build on that to avoid mistakes in our defence,” he said.

Lions will take encouragement from their home performances, having remained unbeaten in three league matches at the Kpando Stadium this season. They have recorded one victory and two goalless draws on their home ground.

Their recent head-to-head record against Berekum Chelsea at home also offers reason for optimism. Since returning to the top flight in the 2024/25 season, Heart of Lions have won both home league meetings between the clubs, with each encounter ending in a 1-0 victory.

However, the hosts will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to turn their home advantage into maximum points against a Chelsea side arriving with renewed confidence.

Berekum Chelsea head into the match following a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Debibi United, a result that ended their three-game winless run and provided a timely boost ahead of their trip to Kpando.

The victory lifted Chelsea to 13th place with seven points, leaving them just one point behind Heart of Lions.

The visitors will now target consecutive league victories for the first time this season as they seek to build momentum and move further up the standings.

Despite their improved confidence, Chelsea’s away form remains a major concern. They have lost all three of their away matches this season, scoring just one goal while conceding seven.

That record places additional pressure on the team to improve defensively and make better use of their opportunities if they are to leave Kpando with a positive result.

With only one point separating the two sides, Saturday’s encounter carries significant importance for both clubs as they seek greater consistency in the early stages of the campaign.

Heart of Lions will aim to preserve their unbeaten home record and recover from their defeat in Tarkwa, while Berekum Chelsea will be eager to end their away-day struggles and record their first points on the road this season.

The contest is expected to provide a competitive test, with both teams aware that a positive result could offer valuable momentum as the Ghana Premier League progresses.
