Former Black Stars midfielder, Sulley Muntari, has criticized the Ghana Premier League, describing it as a “mess” with no future.
Muntari, who returned to the domestic league during the 2021/22 season after a long career in Europe, played for Liberty Professionals before joining Hearts of Oak. During his brief stint with the Phobian Club, he won the President’s Cup and the MTN FA Cup but chose not to extend his contract.
In a recent interview with 3Sports, the 40-year-old former Inter Milan and AC Milan star expressed his dissatisfaction with the state of the league. He described it as a “big hole” where money is being wasted and lamented that it holds “no future.”
“Hearts fans and the president were amazing,” Muntari said. “The league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league.”
Muntari, who won the Champions League in 2010, further expressed his desire to help improve the situation, saying, “I am hoping I can get some funds and really help them. It’s a mess. When I was there, it was a mess. Maybe now it is worse. If we don’t help these guys, we won’t get the top players.”
He also spoke about the poor conditions within the league, recalling his experience in the changing rooms: “The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody.”
Currently, the Ghana Premier League is facing significant challenges, including a lack of a headline sponsor and no broadcast rights holder.
