Berekum Chelsea pulled off a dramatic 2-2 comeback against newly-promoted Basake Holy Stars, thanks to Stephen Amankona’s last-gasp equalizer in their Ghana Premier League showdown at the Golden City Park on Sunday.
The intense match marked Week 9 of the season and saw Chelsea nearly fall to a second straight defeat.
The home side initially looked on track to rebound from last week’s loss, with Emmanuel Sarpong’s goal just before halftime, his second consecutive home goal, putting them in front. Chelsea’s early control hinted at a comfortable outcome, but Holy Stars proved resilient.
Eleven minutes into the second half, Stephen Awuah Baffour equalized for Holy Stars, showing their determination to make an impression in their maiden top-flight season. The visitors then edged ahead in the 80th minute when Burkinabe striker Ben Daouda Sidibe found the net, placing Chelsea on the brink of a consecutive defeat.
With the clock ticking down, Chelsea refused to back down. In stoppage time, Amankona clinched the crucial equalizer, preserving a valuable point for the Bibires and denying Holy Stars a memorable win on the road.
