Accra Lions claimed a vital 1-0 victory over Nations FC at the WAFA Park on Saturday, thanks to an early strike from Nigerian forward Lucky Nwafor.
Nwafor capitalized on a defensive error in the 17th minute, outmuscling his marker before unleashing a precise shot to secure all three points for the Premier League strugglers.
The hosts started aggressively, pushing Nations FC back from the opening whistle. Their relentless pressure paid off with the early goal, as they looked determined to climb off the bottom of the table.
Nations FC responded with sporadic attacks and nearly equalized before halftime, but Lions’ goalkeeper, Daniel Afful, produced a fine save to maintain the lead.
Accra Lions resumed the second half with the same intensity, with Nwafor coming close to doubling his tally. At the other end, Afful once again proved his worth, making a crucial save early in the second period to deny the visitors.
As the game wore on, Lions adopted a more defensive approach, thwarting Nations FC’s late attempts to find an equalizer. Their resolute defending ensured the slim lead held until the final whistle, securing their second win of the season.
The victory provides a much-needed boost for Accra Lions in their fight to move out of the relegation zone, while Nations FC will reflect on missed opportunities as they prepare for their next fixture.
