General Secretary of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), Alex Anning, has revealed a concerning delay in the payment of referees officiating in the Ghana Premier League and other local competitions.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Anning disclosed that referees have only been paid for eight out of the 29 weeks of action in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season, leaving a staggering 21 weeks of unpaid allowances.
He emphasized that the financial strain affects not only Premier League referees but also those who have officiated matches in the MTN FA Cup, Division One League, and the Women’s Premier League.
“All Ghana Premier League referees have been affected by the delayed payment for 21 weeks,” Anning stated. “Referees who officiated the FA Cup, Division One League and the Women’s League are all owed.”
The development raises serious concerns about the welfare and motivation of match officials, who play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of domestic football competitions.
Anning’s revelations add to growing calls for the Ghana Football Association and its stakeholders to prioritize timely payments and improved working conditions for referees across all tiers of the game.
