Karela United bolstered their bid to evade relegation by securing a crucial victory over reigning champions FC Samartex on Sunday, during match week 33 of the Ghana Premier League, hosted at the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex.
With this significant win, Karela United has climbed to the 13th position on the league table, amassing 43 points, while FC Samartex maintains their lead at the top with 58 points.
The match unfolded with Karela United seizing the initiative, as Welbeck Takyi displayed impeccable skill by heading home a magnificent goal from the far post in the 26th minute. The goal stemmed from a brilliantly executed free kick by Mohammed Fatawu, the captain of the Pride and Passioners, from the right side of the box.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Abdul Latif calmly converted from the penalty spot, doubling the lead for the home team and propelling them into halftime with a commanding 2-0 advantage.
However, FC Samartex refused to surrender easily and swiftly narrowed the deficit just one minute into the second half, with Seidu Abubakar finding the back of the net.
Undeterred, Karela United extended their lead once more as Welbeck Takyi struck again in the 56th minute, restoring the two-goal cushion for the hosts. Emmanuel Mamah managed to pull one back for FC Samartex, but Solomon Aboahye sealed the victory for Karela United with a goal in the 87th minute, securing a 4-2 win.
Looking ahead, Karela United is poised to conclude the season with an away fixture against defending champions Medeama at the Tarkwa Akoon Park on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
Meanwhile, FC Samartex will wrap up their season at home against Accra Lions on the same day, where they will be officially crowned champions of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League.
