The English Premier League side held onto the lead to halftime but SC Freiburg equalised three minutes into the second half to restore parity through a strike from Roland Sallai in the 48th minute.
In the hard-fought contest that ensued between the two teams, a Nayef Aguerd strike in the 66th minute sealed a 2-1 win for West Ham United at the end of the 90 minutes.
