Ghana’s Black Starlets suffered a disappointing 1–0 defeat to Senegal on Sunday evening, a result that leaves their 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in serious jeopardy.

A second-half goal from Ibrahima Dione in the 57th minute proved decisive in Rabat, as Senegal claimed their first win of the tournament despite playing part of the match with 10 men.

Ghana went into the Group D clash determined to recover from their opening 2–2 draw against Algeria, while Senegal were also under pressure following a defeat to South Africa in their first fixture.

The Black Starlets made a bright start and enjoyed long spells of possession, showing promising attacking intent. Their biggest opportunity came when Senegal were reduced to 10 men, but Isaac Barfo failed to convert from the penalty spot—a crucial moment that shifted momentum in the contest.

Despite Ghana’s dominance at stages, it was Senegal who struck clinically. A swift counter-attack in the second half was finished expertly by Dione, handing the West Africans a vital three points.

The result leaves Ghana bottom of Group D and facing an uphill task to stay in the competition. In the other group fixture, Algeria defeated South Africa 1–0 to move top of the standings with four points.

For Ghana, qualification now depends on their final group match against South Africa, where only a win will keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage and potentially securing a place at the FIFA U17 World Cup later this year.
