Hamburger SV has announced that defender Stephan Ambrosius will leave the club at the end of the current season, concluding his 12-year tenure with the team.
Ambrosius, a Ghanaian defender, joined HSV from FC St. Pauli at the age of 13. His potential was evident early on, and he quickly ascended through the youth ranks, making his Bundesliga debut at 18 under the guidance of former coach Christian Titz.
Regarded as one of the promising young defenders in Germany’s second tier, there were high hopes that Ambrosius would be instrumental in the club’s rebuilding efforts. However, his progress was significantly hampered by two serious knee injuries, which stunted his development within the team.
To regain match fitness, Ambrosius spent last season on loan at Karlsruher SC before returning to Hamburg to play under head coach Tim Walter. Despite his return, the 25-year-old struggled to secure regular playing time.
Throughout his career at Hamburger SV, Ambrosius made 49 official appearances for the club. As his current contract neared its expiration, the club decided not to offer an extension, leading to his impending departure.
Reflecting on his time with HSV, the club’s management acknowledged his contributions and the unfortunate setbacks he faced. While Ambrosius’s journey with Hamburger SV is ending, his early promise and determination will be remembered by the club and its supporters.
