Ghanaian forward Kwame Poku not getting carried away despite scintillating form in the English League One

The Ghanaian international is arguably the most in-form player in England right now with 15 goal contributions, however, the former Colchester United star is not getting carried away.

After back to back Sky Bet League One Player of the Month awards following superb form in September and October, manager Darren Ferguson joked they would have to rename the trophy in his number 11’s honour. That was before his first professional hat-trick in Saturday’s thumping 6-1 victory over Cambridge United.

It wasn’t just the goal, he created the fifth goal for Ryan De Havilland and even tried to get a sneaky touch before Ricky-Jade Jones scored the all important first goal.

But despite the ‘best form of his life’, Poku is not getting carried away. He has consistently spoken this season about consistency, which whilst ironic, is testament to his attitude right now.

Poku laughed off recent graphics comparing his stats to Cole Palmer in the recent posh unfiltered podcast, and spoke with calmness in the post-match media duty on Saturday.

“I was obviously delighted to score my first hat-trick and to do it in a local derby was special, but I am not getting carried away with it all. Goals and assists will only come if you remain consistent in your performances and that is what I am working hard to do.

“It was nice to win the monthly awards in September and October and I have to thank my team-mates for helping to win that award, but at the start of this month, my only focus was to try and continue impacting games.

“There isn’t too many league games in the month now with the Charlton game being postponed, but it was a good start and I have to carry that on.

“Funnily enough, on Saturday, I wasn’t thinking too much about scoring a hat-trick when I got the first two goals, there certainly wasn’t any thought on my part about taking the penalty as there was a long way to go in the game and I backed myself to get another chance.

“When the third goal went in for me though, that is when it hits you a little bit in terms of what you have done. Hopefully I can score a few more,” Poku said.
