Parma, a newly promoted Serie A club, has made a major signing by securing the services of 21-year-old Ghanaian-Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Sint-Truiden for a reported fee of 7 million euros, with additional bonuses included.
The young shotstopper, who has Ghanaian heritage, had previously been linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, but the deal ultimately fell through. Suzuki began his career in the Urawa Red Diamonds youth system in Japan and was trained in the art of goalkeeping before going professional in 2020.
He quickly made a name for himself on the international stage, participating in all of Japan’s youth national teams and becoming a regular starter for the senior squad by the age of just 19.
Last season, Suzuki played in 32 games in the Jupiler Pro League, showcasing his athleticism, moral integrity, and technical prowess, which has earned him recognition as one of the world’s top young goalkeepers.
Suzuki’s contract with Parma runs until June 30, 2029, and he is expected to be a key player for the Italian club as they navigate their first season back in Serie A.
The signing was reportedly competitive, with Genoa also vying for Suzuki’s services as they sought a replacement for departing goalkeeper Josep Martinez.
