FC Winterthur have completed the loan signing of Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Essiam from FC Basel, with the deal running until the summer of 2027. The move is aimed at bolstering Winterthur’s central midfield with a player known for his dynamism and versatility.
The 22-year-old Ghana U-23 international is no stranger to Swiss football. He arrived from the Ghana Premier League to Basel in early 2022 and has since accumulated over 40 appearances across the Swiss Super League, Challenge League, and Swiss Cup, representing clubs including Basel, Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy, and FC Aarau.
Essiam’s progress was temporarily hampered by injuries, prompting a loan spell to Belgian second-division side Royal Francs Borains, where he regained valuable match fitness. Following a sporting reshuffle at Basel, the 2021 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations winner returned to the club, remaining contracted until 2028.
Now, at Winterthur, Essiam is expected to inject energy and creativity into the midfield as he settles into his new surroundings, providing both defensive stability and attacking impetus for the Swiss side in the coming seasons.
