Ghanaian teenager Bobby Amartey has made history by signing a first professional contract with English Premier League side Leicester City, a move that has left the 18-year-old over the moon.
The 18-year-old defender, who joined the Foxes at the age of 12, has risen through the ranks to earn himself a professional contract. Amartey’s impressive performances with the developmental squad last season and his captaincy of the U21 side in the Premier League 2 have earned him a spot in the first team ahead of the new season.
Last season, Amartey made 14 appearances in the Premier League Two and added to his tally with 21 matches played for the U18s. The talented defender, who can also play in midfield, is thrilled with the progress of his career.
“I feel like it (the season) started off slow,” he revealed during an interview early this year. “But it started picking up and I picked up quite fast and I’m happy where I am now. But I’m not the finished product, so hopefully I can become better.”
Amartey expressed his excitement about playing in midfield, a new position for him, but one that he is enjoying immensely. “I feel more comfortable there,” he said, indicating that he hopes to play more in midfield.
