FC AshantiGold 04 were forced to settle for a goalless draw against a resilient Young Apostles side in their Ghana Premier League Matchweek 10 clash at the Len Clay Stadium on Sunday.
The Miners entered the encounter hoping to build on last weekend’s impressive 2-1 comeback victory over Swedru All Blacks and strengthen their push towards the league’s top four. However, they were frustrated by a disciplined Young Apostles team that produced one of their best defensive displays of the season.
AshantiGold enjoyed spells of possession during the opening half and attempted to dictate the tempo, but they found it difficult to break down a compact Apostles defence that remained organised throughout the contest.
The visitors, who travelled to Obuasi on the back of a difficult run of results, looked far more composed than in recent outings and carried a threat on the counterattack whenever opportunities presented themselves.
Young Apostles came closest to breaking the deadlock midway through the second half, but AshantiGold goalkeeper Fatao Seidu produced a superb save in the 70th minute to deny the visitors and preserve parity. The impressive intervention proved to be one of the defining moments of the match.
AshantiGold pushed forward in the closing stages in search of a winner, but the visitors continued to defend resolutely and limited the hosts to few clear-cut opportunities.
Neither side was able to find the breakthrough before the final whistle, with the contest ending in a hard-fought stalemate.
Although the result denied AshantiGold maximum points on home soil, it extended their remarkable unbeaten league run at the Len Clay Stadium to 20 matches, a sequence that now consists of 15 victories and five draws, underlining their strength in Obuasi.
For Young Apostles, the point represents a significant boost in their fight to climb away from the relegation zone. The Wenchi-based side ended a difficult run with a disciplined away performance and will hope the result serves as a platform for improved performances in the weeks ahead, even though they are still searching for their first away league victory of the season.
