The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the departure of Head Coach Chris Hughton from the Black Stars, a decision welcomed by many football enthusiasts in Ghana.
The move followed Ghana’s failure to progress beyond the group stage in the ongoing competition.
Appointed in January 2022 to rejuvenate the team after a lackluster World Cup campaign, Hughton faced challenges that led to a first-round exit in the AFCON.
Detective Sergeant of the Ghana Police Service, Abdul Hanan Mohammed El-Saeed, commenting on Sportsworldghana’s Facebook page, supported Hughton’s dismissal but called for the resignation of GFA President Kurt Okraku.
“Okraku’s abysmal performance leaves much to be desired, and it would be in his best interest to sincerely assess his position and consider resigning. Throughout his tenure, he has consistently brought the Football Association (FA) into disrepute. Regrettably, our football has become a subject of ridicule within the African continent, and we have attained a lamentable status as the underdogs in nearly every competition on the continent. Instead of sacking Houghton and dissolving the technical team, he should just do the honourable thing by resigning,” he wrote.
Ghana’s inconsistent performances under Hughton included a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, a draw with Egypt, and a crucial 2-2 draw with Mozambique, sealing their fate in the tournament.
The team’s elimination was confirmed as Cameroon overcame Gambia.
Hughton’s sacking, while expected due to the team’s poor showing, reflects the mounting pressure and criticism on the GFA’s handling of the national team.
The decision is seen as a step toward rectifying the situation, with the search for a new coach expected to commence promptly.
Several names are already circulating as potential candidates, and whoever assumes the role faces the formidable challenge of rebuilding the team’s reputation as a leading force in African football.
