Ibrahim Tanko, the coach of the team, defended Daniel Afriyie Barnieh following his numerous missed opportunities in the game against Algeria’s U23 team on Tuesday.
Despite being given several chances to score, the Black Meteors’ captain failed to capitalize on them.
After the 1-0 victory over Algeria, Tanko acknowledged that Barnieh was wasteful, but also pointed out that the player’s overall performance was commendable and contributed to the team’s success.
“I think Barnieh did well though. He spoiled a lot of chances but his general play was good. You can’t just use one game to kill a player, he just moved to Europe. I’m sure he will settle well at his club before the tournament,” Ibrahim Tanko shared.
Tanko stressed that it is unfair to judge a player based on one game, particularly as Barnieh recently moved to Europe and is still adjusting to his new environment.
The victory secured Ghana’s qualification for the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.
