Amidst his explosive debut season at Manchester United, 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has garnered praise from football icon Frank Lampard for his remarkable performances.
Mainoo, who debuted in the 2023 Carabao Cup clash against Newcastle and later featured in his first Premier League match against Leicester City, encountered a brief setback due to injury at the onset of the 2023/24 season. However, his resurgence from November onwards has been nothing short of sensational, solidifying his place in the Manchester United lineup.
The youngster’s stellar displays have not gone unnoticed, with speculation arising regarding potential call-ups to both the England and Ghana national squads for Euro 2024. Despite the attention, it’s not just fans and pundits who recognize Mainoo’s talent; football legends like Frank Lampard have also weighed in on his exceptional abilities.
Lampard, renowned for his illustrious career with Chelsea and Manchester City, drew parallels between Mainoo and some of the world’s top holding midfielders, suggesting that the youngster possesses a maturity beyond his years.
“I don’t think even Rodri or Casemiro were as good as he is at his age. He is the backbone of a club like Manchester United at such a young age. I believe he’ll surpass many big names,” remarked Lampard.
While Mainoo is eligible to represent Ghana through his parents, the Ghana Football Association remains optimistic about convincing him to switch his allegiance to the Black Stars, as expressed by board member Randy Abbey to The Times.
