Former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak striker, Edward Afum, has pointed fingers at the Ghanaian media, attributing them to the diminishing talent pool in the Ghana Premier League.
Affum alleges that journalists often overhype undeserving players, resulting in underwhelming performances in the league.
Expressing concern over the league’s standard, Afum emphasized the noticeable decline in talent compared to his playing days.
“I agree” he told Koforidua-based Bryt FM whiles responding to claims that the standard of the Ghana Premier League has fallen.
“During my time with Kotoko and Hearts, you could see the league was very competitive. At the time, players were hungry to make names for themselves. You could see players from smaller clubs making waves in the league, a lot players were performing well and it raised the league. Players were able to get call up into the national team but the narrative has changed this time”
“In this era footballers are not convincing and consistent. A player can perform marvelously in his first season and in the following season, the same player will perform poorly or abysmally and it’s worrisome”
He highlighted the erratic performance levels of modern-day players, attributing it to excessive media hype and a shortage of top-tier talent.
“There isn’t too much top players in the league as compared to our time. The difference between our time and this generation is very wide. I will blame journalists for the decline in talents. Players are overhyped off late” he added.
