Former Athletic Club forward Raul Garcia has admitted that Iñaki Williams has struggled to replicate his club form for the Ghana national team.
Williams, who pledged his allegiance to Ghana in 2022 despite being born and raised in Spain’s Basque region, debuted for the Black Stars in a friendly against Brazil that September. However, the forward has managed just one goal in 17 appearances for Ghana, a stark contrast to his impressive performances at Athletic Bilbao.
At the club level, Williams has been instrumental in Athletic Bilbao’s success, contributing significantly to their historic Copa del Rey victory—their first in 40 years—and two Spanish Super Cup triumphs.
Speaking to LALIGA press, Raul Garcia reflected on Williams’ international struggles.
“It’s true that he hasn’t reached the desired levels when playing for Ghana,” Garcia acknowledged. “This isn’t an excuse, but the long hours of travel for these matches don’t help a player’s performance. Still, he wants to do things the right way and is committed to being there.”
Despite these challenges, Williams has maintained his stellar form for Athletic Club this season, tallying four goals and five assists in 18 La Liga matches. His contributions have helped the team secure a strong fourth-place standing in the league.
