Nigerian midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has extended his sympathies to Ghana for their disappointing exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking in an interview with Joel Bortey, Iwobi expressed sadness at Ghana’s departure from the tournament, especially considering the close proximity of the two teams during their stay in Abidjan.
“Of course, there’s a lot of rivalry between us two. There are a lot of people that I respect. I have a lot of friends outside the team that are Ghanaians,” remarked the Fulham player.
“It’s almost like you want them to do well so you can play against them and prove a point in the competition but it’s a shame because the way they exited with the sort of players they have was a bit sad to see.”
Ghana’s early exit from AFCON came after they failed to secure a single victory in the group stage, accumulating only two points and finishing third in Group B.
Despite a chance to progress as one of the best third-placed teams, their elimination was sealed when Cameroon defeated The Gambia.
