Bafana Bafana put smiles on the faces of every South African on Saturday night with a hard-fought victory over the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde.

In a tense clash between South Africa and Cape Verde, it was 0-0 after 120 minutes and Ronwen Williams superbly saved 4 of Cape Verde’s 5 penalties.

Speaking to the press after the game, the 31-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns’ defender, Grant Kekena, was excited and urged South Africans back home to savour the victory.

“It’s been a while since the people back home had something to smile about”, said Kekana.

Bafana Bafana has been poor as they have failed to play in the FIFA World Cup since 2010. In the AFCON they last reached the semi-finals in CAN 2000.

“We know this is not the end but it feels good”, added Kekana. The centre-back believes more exciting moments are ahead in the 2023 AFCON.

Bafana Bafana will face Nigeria in a crunch clash on Wednesday in Bouake at the Stade de la Paix.
