Renowned athletics icon, Edwin Moses, recently shared his insights on Ghana’s role as the host nation for the 13th African Games, set to kick off on Friday, March 8th at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Moses addressed his expectations during an interview conducted at the Victory in Unity event, alongside Sports Equity Lab founder Professor Dr. Yetsa Tukornu-Wosornu and celebrated Ghanaian wheelchair athlete Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe.
Reflecting on the significance of Ghana’s hosting of the multi-sport event, Moses expressed confidence in its success, highlighting the country’s long-awaited opportunity to serve as the host. He emphasized the event’s importance as an Olympic qualifier for some athletes, underscoring the need for smooth proceedings to ensure athletes have the opportunity to compete at their best.
“I know that it’s a great event. It’s been a long time coming here to Ghana so I think automatically it’s going to be successful, it’s in a good year. It’s an Olympic qualifiers for some athletes so I just hope that event goes off smoothly and the athletes get the chance to compete.”
Additionally, Botsyo Nkegbe, a prominent figure in para-athletics, expressed disappointment over the exclusion of para-athletics events from the African Games.
Despite this setback, Moses acknowledged the event’s significance, particularly for athletics, which is among the seven sports disciplines serving as qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
These disciplines include cycling, triathlon, wrestling, and table tennis, adding to the event’s prestige and importance on the global sporting stage.
