Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has urged Ghanaians to exhibit patience with Otto Addo as he embarks on his tenure as head coach of the national team.
Addo recently assumed the role of head coach, overseeing Ghana’s matches against Nigeria and Uganda during the March international break. Despite a 2-2 draw against Uganda, Addo’s return has coincided with a challenging period for the Black Stars, as the team struggles to secure victories.
Ghana’s last win dates back to September 2023 under Chris Hughton, and with no victories in his first two games in charge, Addo’s team has now gone seven matches without a win across all competitions.
However, Gyan, who shared the field with Addo during the 2006 World Cup, remains optimistic about his former teammate’s ability to lead the team effectively given time to rebuild.
“Otto Addo has returned to a different atmosphere and with different players. Although he has worked with some of the players, I believe it’s still a process,” remarked Asamoah Gyan on Asempa FM. “He also came with a new staff, so it’s a different era.”
”Let’s see what he also has for us. We will support him through his rebuilding to see where he can take us”
Gyan emphasized the importance of supporting Addo during the rebuilding phase and allowing him the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities.
“Ghanaians will ultimately judge his performance, but I think we should afford him the time to rebuild the team,” Gyan added.
Otto Addo previously led the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team managed to secure one victory in three matches, falling short of progressing from the group stage due to defeats against Portugal and Uruguay.
