Former Hearts of Oak coach and Ghana international, Kim Grant, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to relieve Black Stars head coach Otto Addo of his duties after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Grant criticized Addo’s tactical approach, arguing that the coach lacks the necessary experience to establish a cohesive system that leverages the players’ strengths.
“The tactical decisions reflect a glaring lack of experience and the inability to create a coherent playing system tailored to the players’ abilities,” Grant remarked. “We’re seeing square pegs forced into round holes, wasting talent and failing to maximize potential on the pitch.”
The Black Stars endured a dismal qualifying campaign, finishing bottom of Group F without a single win. The team suffered defeats at home to Angola and Niger, marking the first time in 21 years that Ghana has missed out on the AFCON tournament.
Grant also expressed frustration at what he sees as unwarranted protection of the current technical staff.
“Coaches in the past were dismissed for far less, yet this technical team is being shielded by an inner circle even after this disastrous campaign. The notion of retaining them for the World Cup qualifiers is outrageous and risks further embarrassment. It’s time to stop protecting mediocrity, banish egos, and demand accountability,” he said.
The GFA Executive Council is set to meet on Wednesday to discuss the Black Stars’ poor showing in the qualifiers and deliberate on the team’s future, including the fate of Otto Addo and his staff.
