Antoine Semenyo delivered a moment of brilliance to fire Manchester City FC to FA Cup glory against Chelsea FC while simultaneously writing his name into Ghanaian football history.

The Black Stars forward scored the only goal in City’s tense 1-0 victory at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, producing a piece of instinctive improvisation that settled the 2025/26 FA Cup final.

With the contest finely balanced and both sides struggling to find a breakthrough, Semenyo found himself under pressure inside the penalty area with his back to goal and defenders closing in quickly.

With little space and almost no time to react, the Ghanaian forward improvised brilliantly, cushioning the ball into the bottom corner with a composed touch that left the Chelsea defence helpless and sent the Manchester City supporters into celebration.

The strike not only secured another major trophy for Pep Guardiola’s side but also carried enormous historical significance for Ghanaian football.

Semenyo became the first Ghanaian player ever to score in an FA Cup final, ending decades of near-misses by some of the country’s greatest footballers on England’s biggest domestic stage.

The goal also saw the 25-year-old break a long-standing record previously held by Ghana legend Tony Yeboah.

His Wembley winner was Semenyo’s 20th goal of the season across all competitions, surpassing Yeboah’s record of 19 goals for Leeds United FC during the 1995/96 campaign — a mark that had stood for 30 years.

Speaking after the final, Semenyo admitted instinct took over in the decisive moment.

“I just tried to improvise the best I could and it went in the bottom corner so I can’t complain,” he said.

“I’ve done it a couple of times in training. It was behind me so that’s the only thing I could do and luckily for me it went in.”

The Ghana international has enjoyed a sensational campaign split across two clubs. He scored 10 goals during the first half of the season for AFC Bournemouth before adding another 10 since completing his January move to Manchester City.

Despite his rapid rise, Semenyo credited hard work and learning from elite teammates for his continued development.

“It’s been hard work. I am learning a lot with a lot of top pros around me and a top coach. Long may it continue,” he added.

The FA Cup triumph marks the second trophy Semenyo has won since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, having already lifted the Carabao Cup earlier in the season.

He also paid tribute to Guardiola’s influence on his growth as a player.

“He’s a madman. We all love him. He’s so passionate and wants to win trophies. What he’s done for the club is amazing. I’m grateful he gets to coach me and make me a better player.”

Manchester City will now quickly shift focus back to the Premier League as they continue their pursuit of more domestic silverware before the season concludes.
