Despite failing to win the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Ivory Coast, Avram Grant believes the Black Stars were the better team in the tournament
After a rough start to the competition in Equatorial Guinea, the Black Stars advanced to the finals for the first time, having last done so in 2010, when they lost to Egypt in Angola.
After playing out a goalless game in 120 minutes of action, the game travelled to penalties where Ivory Coast won 9-8.
However, the former Chelsea manager who replaced Kwesi Appiah following the Black Stars’ terrible performance at the 2014 World Cup believes they were the better team despite losing the trophy.
“I will never forget we were in a tough group with Algeria, Senegal, and South Africa,” Avram Grant told the press on his arrival in Ghana on June 20, 2023.
“We lost the first game but we showed loads of mentality we came to the finals and there was no doubt that we were better than Ivory Coast. Yaya Toure told me this when I met him,” the coach said.
Grant recently led Zambia to their first AFCON qualification after failing to do so since their last appearance in 2015.
