Mark Hughes has confirmed that the trialist midfielder who played for Carlisle United at Harrogate Town is Jed Abbey.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers and South Shields man, most recently with Alfreton Town, made a second-half outing for the Blues in Saturday’s 2-0 win.
Netherlands-born Abbey, 23, replaced Callum Whelan after 68 minutes as head coach Hughes ran the rule over him in Yorkshire.
Hughes later told the News & Star that Abbey, who was born in Den Haag, has been training with the squad.
He said: “Jed has come in, he’s been connected with Alfreton Town and had a good season.
“He’s scored goals from midfield, and he’s a big, physical guy.
“That’s a bit of the area that we’re looking at.
“I thought he did okay. We’ve been happy with what he’s done training-wise.”
Hughes suggested United would have to make a quick decision on Abbey, who played for Alfreton in National League North last season.
Asked if Abbey could remain at the club for longer before a decision, Hughes said: “I’m sure he could. He probably would give himself a better chance if he could.
“But we understand these guys want to get fixed up pretty rapidly. So, we’ll have to wait and see.”
