Ghana defender Jerome Opoku says the Black Stars are steadily proving critics wrong after another disciplined display at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the team will remain focused and humble despite their strong start.
The Black Stars held tournament favourites England to a hard-fought 0-0 draw in their Group L clash on Tuesday night, producing another compact and organised defensive performance to frustrate the Three Lions.
The result keeps Ghana level on four points with England at the top of the group, leaving them in a strong position heading into the final round of matches.
Speaking after the game, Opoku thanked fans for their support while insisting the squad remains grounded.
“I appreciate the love from the fans. And we’re going to continue to stay grounded.”
He also addressed pre-tournament criticism, revealing that the squad had used negative perceptions as motivation.
“Ghanaians didn’t really think this team was that good… me and the boys were talking about it.”
Opoku added that being doubted has long been part of his journey and said the team thrives on proving people wrong.
“Through my life, I’ve been an underdog… I get a buzz from it. And so does the team.”
The defender believes Ghana’s performances are changing opinions both locally and globally, as the team continues to build momentum with a win over Panama and the draw against England.
Attention now turns to a decisive Group L clash against Croatia, where another positive result could secure qualification to the Round of 32 and potentially top spot in the group.
