Ghanaian youth international Jerry Afriyie made an immediate impact on his return to CD Lugo, delivering a goal and an assist to inspire a dramatic comeback in a 2-2 draw against Gimnàstic at the Nou Estadi Costa Daurada.
The 18-year-old Black Satellites forward returned to Spain after leaving Ghana’s U20 camp at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, following an agreement between CD Lugo and the Ghana Football Association. Despite arriving just 48 hours before kickoff, Afriyie was named in the starting XI—and he did not disappoint.
Gimnàstic took control early in the match, with Antoñín opening the scoring in the 28th minute. The hosts doubled their lead just before halftime through veteran defender Joan Oriol, leaving Lugo with a mountain to climb.
But Afriyie turned the tide in the second half with a sensational performance. He first set up Lizancos with a precise assist in the 67th minute to reduce the deficit. Then, deep into stoppage time, the Ghanaian forward struck the equalizer to snatch a valuable point for Lugo, completing a thrilling comeback.
Afriyie’s return could not have been more impactful, earning him the Man of the Match award. He now boasts three goals and two assists in eight league appearances for CD Lugo this season.
