Southampton and Black Stars winger Kamaldeen Sulemana has hailed Jordan Ayew as the greatest Ghanaian striker to grace the English Premier League, sparking discussion among football fans with his bold declaration.
Speaking in an interview with Showmax, the 23-year-old was asked to name his top Ghanaian performer in the Premier League. Sulemana initially tipped Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew as his standout pick, crediting the veteran forward for his consistency and resilience in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.
However, after some reflection, Sulemana added a twist to his answer — shifting the overall best Ghanaian Premier League player title to Chelsea legend Michael Essien, while maintaining Ayew’s place as the top Ghanaian striker.
“Actually, I change my mind,” he said with a laugh. “I have to give it to Essien for all he achieved with Chelsea in the Premier League. If we are looking at strikers, then definitely Jordan, but generally it has to be Essien. He was one of the best coaches I had as well. We worked together in Denmark. He’s such a nice guy.”
Jordan Ayew’s Premier League journey began in 2015, and over the past nine years, he has represented Aston Villa, Swansea City, and Crystal Palace. He recently joined Leicester City and continues to be a dependable figure in attack. Ayew has racked up over 300 appearances in the league, scoring 41 goals and providing 25 assists — numbers that underscore his longevity and adaptability in English football.
While Michael Essien’s trophy-laden career at Chelsea rightfully earns him accolades as one of Ghana’s greatest exports to the Premier League, Kamaldeen’s distinction gives Ayew his due recognition among Ghanaian strikers.
The conversation has since fueled fan debate, with many weighing in on the legacy of both players in the Premier League era.
