Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has applauded Ghana captain Jordan Ayew’s performance following the club’s narrow victory over Bristol City in the English Championship.
The experienced forward made his first start for the Blades after joining the club as a free agent in the summer following his departure from Leicester City.
Ayew featured for 69 minutes as Sheffield United secured an important win to climb higher in the Championship standings, delivering a hardworking display that impressed his manager.
The former Crystal Palace and Leicester City attacker completed 13 accurate passes, contributed five defensive actions and won three of his eight ground duels during his time on the pitch.
Speaking after the match, Wilder highlighted Ayew’s influence in helping the team press effectively and regain control of the contest.
“We made some changes [to the starting unit]; delighted for Jordan. His performance was really good, allowed us to go and press and get after them and allow them for them to go wrong for us to break up and control the game,” Wilder said.
“Hopefully it’s a great boost for his confidence, but him and Kalvin [Phillips] were exceptional and outstanding.”
The victory provided a timely response for Sheffield United after their midweek setback, with Ayew’s contribution adding another positive sign as he continues to settle into life at the club.
The 35-year-old has now made four appearances for Sheffield United across all competitions since his arrival, although he is still searching for his first goal contribution in a Blades shirt.
