Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has defended his decision to include Jordan Ayew in the Black Stars squad, insisting the experienced forward still has an important role to play despite growing calls for him to step away from international football.
Ayew’s place in the national team has been a subject of debate following a disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, where the veteran attacker failed to record a single shot on target during Ghana’s matches at the tournament.
The 35-year-old has also struggled for regular playing time since joining Sheffield United as a free agent, featuring for less than 70 minutes across three appearances after completing his move late in the transfer window.
However, Queiroz believes Ayew’s experience, leadership and understanding of international football remain valuable assets as Ghana begins a new phase under his guidance.
Speaking ahead of the Black Stars’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, the Portuguese coach explained why he continues to trust the former Crystal Palace and Aston Villa forward.
“I still have this young boy, Jordan Ayew, who is starting to renew his career. But around him, just check the age of the players that we have at this moment. It is a starting point,” Queiroz said.
Ayew has been one of Ghana’s most consistent players over the past decade, earning more than 100 caps and becoming one of the most experienced members of the current squad.
His continued involvement, however, has divided opinion among supporters, with some fans calling for younger attackers to be given more opportunities as Ghana attempts to rebuild after missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Queiroz has chosen a different approach, believing a balance between youth and experience will be crucial as the Black Stars look to return to the top level of African football.
Jordan Ayew is expected to be part of Ghana’s preparations as they begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24 before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
The Black Stars coach will hope the experienced forward can rediscover his form and use his leadership qualities to guide a team aiming to secure qualification and compete for major honours once again.
