Real Valladolid defender Joseph Aidoo suffered an injury during his team’s 7-1 defeat to Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Sunday.
The 28-year-old was forced off in the 65th minute at San Mamés, as Spain international Nico Williams scored twice in a dominant performance that pushed Athletic Bilbao four points clear of Villarreal in fifth place. His brother, Ghana international Inaki Williams, capped off the scoring after Mikel Jauregizar’s 10th-minute opener.
Aidoo, who had started all three matches since joining Valladolid, was unable to complete the game due to the injury. He had recorded 10 clearances and three tackles (winning all three) before being substituted.
The Ghanaian defender previously suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg while on national duty, a setback that occurred in a friendly against Mexico on October 14, 2023. That injury sidelined him for most of the season, limiting him to just one brief appearance at Celta Vigo before he sought regular playing time with a winter move to Valladolid.
Aidoo, who began his European career with Swedish club Hammarby in 2015 before joining KRC Genk in Belgium two years later, had made significant progress in his recovery. However, this latest injury setback suggests he may still have work to do to regain full fitness.
