Ghanaian winger Joseph Paintsil delivered a stellar performance as LA Galaxy secured a dominant 6-2 victory over Minnesota United, booking their place in the 2024 Western Conference final of Major League Soccer.
Paintsil, who joined LA Galaxy in February, continued his impressive debut season by scoring a brace in the emphatic win at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles. The 26-year-old has been a key figure for the five-time champions, contributing significantly with double-digit goals during the regular season.
The match began with a thrilling pace, as Gabriel Pec opened the scoring for LA Galaxy in the very first minute, finishing off a superb assist from Riqui Puig. However, Minnesota United responded quickly, equalizing in the sixth minute through Kelvin Yeboah, who unleashed a powerful left-footed strike.
Dejan Joveljic restored the lead for LA Galaxy in the 17th minute, heading in a precise free-kick delivery from Marco Reus. Paintsil extended the advantage in the 37th minute, connecting with a perfect cross from Miki Yamane to make it 3-1.
Just before halftime, Yeboah converted a penalty in the 45th minute to bring Minnesota back within striking distance.
In the second half, LA Galaxy took complete control. Gabriel Pec added his second goal of the game, but he was denied a hat-trick after missing a penalty in the 78th minute.
Paintsil struck again in the 86th minute, curling in a brilliant finish after receiving a pass from John Nelson. Joveljic put the finishing touch on the victory with LA’s sixth goal late in the match.
The win propels LA Galaxy into the Western Conference final, where they will face the Seattle Sounders in a highly anticipated clash.
