Swedish coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren landed in Ghana on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, to officially begin his tenure as the head coach of the Black Queens.
Upon arrival at the Kotoka International Airport, he was welcomed by representatives from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Bjorkegren, a highly experienced coach with nearly two decades in football management, replaces Nora Häuptle, whose contract with the GFA ended in December 2024. His appointment was officially confirmed by the GFA on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, marking the beginning of a new era for Ghana’s women’s national team.
His football journey started as a player for his hometown club in Ljungsbro, Sweden, before joining Allsvenska Atvidabergs FF, a former Swedish top-flight side. However, an injury at age 22 forced him to retire early and transition into coaching—a decision that has since shaped his career.
With a UEFA License A coaching certificate, Bjorkegren has spent over 18 years coaching in both Sweden and internationally. His achievements include leading Apollon Ladies to a league title in Cyprus and winning the Damallsvenskan championship with Linköping FC in Sweden. His exceptional performance during the 2020-2021 season earned him the prestigious Coach of the Season award in Cyprus.
As he takes charge of the Black Queens, expectations are high for him to continue the strong foundation laid by his predecessor, Nora Häuptle, and steer the team to greater success.
