Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has expressed strong confidence in newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, describing him as an experienced addition who will greatly benefit Ghana football ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese tactician, who has signed a four-month deal, replaces Otto Addo following Ghana’s disappointing performances, including consecutive defeats during the March international break.

Queiroz, 73, brings vast experience from managing top national teams such as Portugal, Egypt, and South Africa, as well as multiple World Cup campaigns.

Speaking after the coach was officially introduced to the sector minister ahead of his unveiling at the Alisa Hotel, Kofi Adams welcomed the appointment with optimism, stressing that Ghana stands to gain from Queiroz’s wealth of knowledge.

“We are going to benefit from him, and as the saying goes, the old wine tastes the best,” he said.

He further emphasized the coach’s extensive background at both club and international levels, particularly his experience on the World Cup stage.

“He has gathered experience all over, and his experience will be put before the Black Stars of Ghana, and so we are so lucky to have such an experienced coach, not just at the club level but at the national level and at the World Cup stage,” Mr Adams added.

The introduction ceremony was attended by Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, members of the Black Stars management committee, and Executive Council members.

Queiroz is expected to begin his tenure with friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as part of preparations for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude their group matches against Croatia on June 27.

After exiting at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022, Ghana will be hoping Queiroz’s experience can help steer the team to a stronger performance this time around.
