Kofi Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, says the government is considering plans to send Ghanaian supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup through a national fundraising drive.
He explained that the government has taken a clear decision to work towards ensuring strong fan support for the Black Stars at the tournament, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. According to him, a special fundraising committee has been set up to raise money to support the initiative.
Mr. Adams noted that the number of fans who will travel to the World Cup will depend on how much money is raised through the campaign. He stressed that sending supporters abroad requires a lot of resources, making it necessary for the effort to be supported by many hands.
He therefore called on corporate bodies, companies, mining firms, and well-meaning individuals to contribute, describing the initiative as a national responsibility aimed at backing the Black Stars on the world stage.
The Sports Minister added that although no specific target has been set for the number of fans to be sent, the government is committed to doing its best to create a strong Ghanaian presence at the tournament. The move is seen as part of efforts to boost team morale as Ghana prepares to face tough opponents in Group L, which includes England, Croatia, and Panama.
The fundraising drive is expected to bring together public and private support to help project Ghana’s passion for football beyond its borders.
