Kofi Balmer, a footballer from Northern Ireland, has no direct ties to Ghana, but his parents named him after the late Kofi Annan, the former United Nations Secretary-General.
Annan, a celebrated Ghanaian diplomat and one of Africa’s most revered global figures, served as the UN’s Secretary-General from 1997 to 2006. He passed away in Bern, Switzerland, at the age of 80 following a brief illness.
The diplomat’s legacy has inspired many parents worldwide to name their children after him, and Balmer is among those who carry the name in his honor.
Balmer, who has represented Northern Ireland’s U21 national team, made over 40 appearances across all competitions last season. The young defender currently plays for English Premier League club Crystal Palace, joining the ranks of footballers named after influential figures in global history.
The tribute embedded in his name serves as a reminder of Kofi Annan’s lasting impact on international diplomacy and the inspiration he continues to provide across the world.
