Kotoko tried to convince me to stay — Karim Zito opens up on resignation

Former Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has disclosed that the club made several attempts to convince him to remain in charge, but he had already made up his mind to step down.

Zito officially resigned on Monday, just a day after Kotoko were eliminated from the FA Cup following a 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium in their Round of 16 encounter.

“It Became a Family Matter” — Zito Explains Decision

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, the former Black Satellites coach revealed that his decision was influenced by discussions with people close to him, describing it as a deeply personal matter.

“It became a family issue, and we had to talk it out and find an amicable solution. In the end, we all agreed that I should leave,” he explained.

Club Officials Tried to Change His Mind

Zito noted that Kotoko’s leadership made genuine efforts to persuade him to reconsider, but he remained resolute in his decision to walk away.

“They did their best to change my mind, but my mind was already made up. I am a legend of the club, and if an issue arises, you need to remain calm and talk things out. I have resigned,” he said.

Proud of Trophy-Laden Spell

Despite his relatively short stay, Zito expressed satisfaction with what he achieved during his time at the club, highlighting the success he enjoyed with the Porcupine Warriors.

“I have been on the job for barely a year, and I won four trophies. I am very happy about it,” he added.

Zito took over as head coach in April last year and guided the team to FA Cup glory at the end of the season, among other achievements during his tenure.

Assistants to Lead Kotoko in Super Clash

Following his departure, Asante Kotoko have confirmed that assistant coaches Prince Osei Yaw and Hamza Obeng will take temporary charge of the team ahead of Sunday’s crucial Super Clash against Hearts of Oak.
