Kwaku Amponsah and Referees Manager Alex Kotey are at the centre of renewed controversy surrounding refereeing in the Ghana Premier League, following strong comments from the Asante Kotoko Global Supporters leadership.
Speaking on a Kumasi-based radio station, the supporters’ patron openly accused Alex Kotey of creating serious challenges for match officiating in the league, particularly in games involving Asante Kotoko.
According to Kwaku Amponsah, the current Referees Manager has consistently overseen decisions that go against Kotoko, which he believes shows clear bias and undermines fairness in the competition.
He was quoted as saying, “Alex Kotey has become a major problem for refereeing in the GPL. We are calling on the GFA to remove him as Referees Manager and appoint a new person, because he has shown clear bias against Asante Kotoko whenever decisions go against us.”
The supporters insist that confidence in the refereeing system is being eroded and have therefore called on the Ghana Football Association to intervene by appointing a new Referees Manager to restore credibility and trust in the league.
The remarks add to ongoing debates about officiating standards in the Ghana Premier League, as pressure mounts on football authorities to address concerns raised by clubs and supporters.
