Award-winning broadcaster Kwame Sefa Kayi has declared his support for former Black Stars captain André Ayew to become the next president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) if he decides to contest the position in October 2027.
The veteran journalist believes Ghana football needs a change in leadership and a new direction, amid growing criticism of the administration led by current GFA president Kurt Okraku.
Speaking on Peace FM, Sefa Kayi openly endorsed Ayew and expressed his desire to see the former national team captain enter the race for the top position in Ghana football.
“If he has not declared, then I am declaring for him. If Dede [Ayew] decides to contest, I will support him, and I wish everybody would do the same so that there will be changes,” he said.
Sefa Kayi stressed that his position was deliberate, making it clear that he had a personal interest in seeing Ayew contest the election.
“For this, I have declared that I am not saying I am biased. For this, I have an interest,” he added.
Ayew, who has captained Ghana at major international tournaments, is yet to publicly announce any intention to contest the GFA presidency. However, reports suggest that some individuals within football circles have approached him and encouraged him to consider entering the race.
The 2027 election is expected to attract considerable attention as football stakeholders debate the direction of the sport and the leadership needed to address its challenges.
Several personalities have already been linked with a possible challenge for the presidency. They include football administrator Samuel Annim Addo, former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association chairman Ralph Gyambrah and Karela United chief executive officer Elloeny Amande.
Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has also been mentioned as a potential contender.
Sefa Kayi’s endorsement adds to the growing public discussion surrounding Ayew’s possible political future in football administration. However, until the former captain makes an official declaration, his participation in the October 2027 election remains uncertain.
The GFA presidency is one of the most influential positions in Ghanaian football, with responsibility for overseeing the administration and development of the game, including the national teams and domestic competitions.
The upcoming election is therefore likely to be closely watched by supporters, club officials, administrators and other stakeholders seeking to shape the future of Ghana football.
