Asante Kotoko forward Kwame Opoku has opened up about his emotional departure from the club in 2021 and expressed his renewed ambition to deliver silverware for the team during his second stint.
Opoku, who left the Kumasi-based giants for Algerian side USM Alger three years ago, admitted that parting ways with the club was a tough decision, given his connection with the fans and the team.
“Leaving Kotoko was a hard decision for me. The morning before my departure, I felt bad about leaving such a great club. It wasn’t easy because I had grown attached to the team and the supporters who made me feel at home,” Opoku revealed in an interview with Kotoko’s media team.
During his first spell at the club, the 25-year-old striker impressed with nine goals, quickly becoming a key player. However, despite his outstanding performances, he left Kotoko without winning any trophies—a reality he is determined to change upon his return.
“I couldn’t win any trophy in my first stint, but I believe this time I have a lot to offer,” he said. “I’m here to help the team achieve its goals—winning trophies and competing at the continental level. That is what I am focused on.”
Opoku’s return has generated excitement among Kotoko’s faithful, with fans hopeful that his goal-scoring abilities will significantly bolster the team’s attacking options.
Officially unveiled before the Super Clash against rivals Hearts of Oak last weekend, the striker’s presence on the sidelines was a symbolic moment for the club.
