Mali sacks head coach Eric Chelle over poor performance

At the post-match conference, a Malian journalist emphatically told Eric Chelle to resign after the 2-1 defeat against Ghana in Bamako in matchday three of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The gathered Malian journalists were extremely disappointed for accruing just 4 points from a possible 9. What angered them most was the fact that all the three games they played were at home and they failed to take a huge advantage of the opportunity.

On Thursday, FEMAFOOT announced the termination of the contract of Eric Sekou Chelle, the head coach of the Eagles.

The statement they released for the press reads: “The Executive Committee of the federation Malian Football, met in an extraordinary session today, decided unanimously, with the agreement of the guardian authority, to end the collaboration between the coach of the Senior National Team, Mr Eric Sékou CHELLE and FEMAFOOT.

“The Executive Committee thanks the concerned person for the efforts made to lead the Eagles.

“In addition, FEMAFOOT would like to thank the highest Authorities, in particular the Department in charge of Sports for their constant accompaniment in favour of the National Teams.

“Made in Bamako on this day June 13, 2024. The 1st Vice President: Moussa Silvain Diakité,” wrote Federation Malian Football.

Mali sits in 4th position in Group I trailing joint leaders Comoros and Ghana 5 points each. The Eagles disappointingly drew goalless against 10 men in Madagascar on matchday four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as it was the last straw that made FEMAFOOT lose interest in Eric Chelle.

A new coach will be appointed before the 2025 AFCON qualifiers which are set to be played in September, October and November 2025.

Mali returns to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a crucial visit to Comoros and Central African Republic in March 2025.
