The Mauritanian Football Federation has officially announced the contract extension of national team head coach Amir Abdou following an exceptional performance at the AFCON 2023 tournament.
Amid speculation linking him to other coaching opportunities, the French/Comorian tactician has committed to the Mourabitounes for another three years, extending his tenure until 2026. Abdou’s initial contract was set to expire on March 1, 2024.
Under Abdou’s leadership, Mauritania achieved a historic milestone by advancing to the knockout stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, marking their first-ever progression beyond the group stage.
Their remarkable journey included a memorable victory over 2019 AFCON champions, Algeria, in the group stage. Although they were narrowly defeated by Cape Verde in the Round of 16, Abdou’s guidance earned widespread acclaim.
Despite reported interest from the Ghana Football Association and a lucrative salary offer, Abdou opted to continue his tenure with Mauritania. The Mauritanian Football Federation announced the contract extension via their official social media channels on Thursday, February 8, 2024.
Abdou’s primary objective moving forward will be to secure qualification for the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco next year.
Additionally, he will lead Mauritania’s efforts to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, slated to be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
