Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC will face one of Africa’s most decorated clubs, TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
The draw presents a daunting challenge for the Tarkwa-based side, who will be aiming to overcome the Congolese giants and book a place in the next stage of Africa’s elite club competition.
Despite the difficult pairing, Medeama will draw confidence from their impressive debut campaign in the CAF Champions League group stage during the 2023/24 season. Competing in a challenging group that featured Al Ahly, CR Belouizdad and Young Africans, the Ghanaian champions showed resilience and quality on the continental stage.
Medeama recorded memorable victories over CR Belouizdad and Young Africans at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, while also producing spirited performances against eventual champions Al Ahly. Although they narrowly missed out on qualification to the knockout stage, the Mauve and Yellow earned widespread praise for their fearless displays in their maiden group-stage appearance.
Now, with valuable continental experience under their belt, Medeama will be hoping to build on that campaign as they prepare for another African adventure. Eliminating seven-time CAF Champions League winners TP Mazembe would rank among the club’s greatest achievements and further cement their growing reputation on the continent.
The first leg is expected to be played later this month, with the return leg in Lubumbashi set to determine which side progresses to the next qualifying round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
