Ghanaian coach Bismark Kobi Mensah has shared an emotional account of former Black Stars legend Michael Essien’s remarkable generosity, revealing how the ex-Chelsea midfielder financed his coaching courses in England.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Mensah recounted how Essien’s selfless act transformed his career, emphasizing the profound impact it had on his life.
“Michael Essien has been a long-time friend from my secondary school days. We also played together for Ghana with the Black Starlets team,” Mensah said. “He paid a lot of money for me to pursue some of my coaching courses in England. I don’t think any family member would do what Essien has done for me.”
On the international stage, Essien earned 58 caps for the Black Stars, scoring 9 goals, and played a key role in Ghana’s successes during the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups.
After retiring from professional football, Essien pursued coaching, earning his UEFA coaching license. He has since taken on various coaching roles, including serving as a player-coach for Sabail FK in Azerbaijan.
Mensah’s story highlights Essien’s dedication not only to the game but also to nurturing the next generation of football talent. Essien’s generosity continues to inspire, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
