Former Asante Kotoko star Sarfo Gyamfi has stirred debate among Ghanaian football fans by declaring Mohammed Polo as the greatest Ghanaian footballer of all time, ahead of Abedi Pele.

Speaking on Kumasi-based Kessben FM, Gyamfi, who played alongside Polo in the Black Stars, insisted that Polo’s talent was unmatched.

“Let me tell you, Ghana’s finest ever player is Mohammed Polo. He was too good. He is the best ever. I played against him many times in Kotoko and Hearts of Oak games, and so I know what I am saying. I also played with him in the same Black Stars team. He was simply unplayable. For me, he is the best Ghanaian player ever.”

A Debate That Will Divide Opinions

Gyamfi’s comments are bound to spark heated discussions among Ghanaian football enthusiasts, as both Polo and Abedi Pele have legendary statuses in the country’s football history.

Mohammed Polo, best known for his time with Hearts of Oak, made over 200 appearances for the club and played a key role in Ghana’s 1978 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph. His dribbling skills and flair earned him the nickname “The Dribbling Magician.”

Abedi Pele, on the other hand, enjoyed a glittering career in Europe, featuring for clubs like Al Sadd, Lyon, Lille, and Olympique Marseille, where he won the UEFA Champions League. He was also part of Ghana’s AFCON-winning squad in 1982 and won the African Footballer of the Year award three times.

Polo’s Talent Was Unmatched – Gyamfi

Despite Abedi Pele’s international achievements, Gyamfi remains adamant that Polo’s natural talent and playing ability place him above any other Ghanaian footballer in history.

His remarks will undoubtedly fuel further debate, as fans and analysts weigh the domestic and international legacies of both legendary players.
