Ghana’s preparations for the upcoming World Cup have suffered a major blow after AS Monaco confirmed that defender Mohammed Salisu has sustained a serious knee injury, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury during Monaco’s 3–1 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais—a night that proved costly for the Principality club on multiple fronts. The loss not only dented Monaco’s hopes of securing European qualification but also saw a number of key players sidelined with injuries.
Monaco revealed on Monday that Salisu suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, a diagnosis that effectively ends his season and casts doubt over his participation in Ghana’s World Cup campaign. Alarmingly, this marks the second ACL injury to a Monaco player in consecutive matches.
‘”At the very end of the match against Olympique Lyonnais, our central defender Mohammed Salisu was injured in his left knee. Medical examinations revealed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. The Club will support Mohammed throughout his recovery and offers him all its support. Courage Sali, we’re with you” the club announced.
Before the setback, Salisu had become a mainstay in Monaco’s defense, stepping up impressively in the absence of Mawissa and experienced centre-back Eric Dier.
His commanding performances had provided the team with much-needed stability at the back.
For Ghana, losing Salisu would be a significant blow. The former Southampton centre-back has been a cornerstone for the Black Stars, forming a dependable partnership with Alexander Djiku. Beyond his defensive duties, Salisu has contributed crucial goals, including his strike in Ghana’s memorable win over South Korea at the 2022 World Cup.
His absence would leave a major gap in the Black Stars’ defense, with his leadership, physical presence, and consistency set to be sorely missed on football’s biggest stage.
