Ghanaian winger Mohammed Sofo was named Man of the Match after delivering a stellar performance in New York Red Bulls’ emphatic 4-1 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the Leagues Cup round of 32.
Sofo, who has been enjoying a standout season with the Red Bulls, played a crucial role in the victory at Widner Field by netting a brace that powered the 2024 MLS finalists into the last 16 of the competition. The 20-year-old started the match and was later substituted late in the second half for Cameroonian striker Erik Choupo-Moting.
The in-form forward wasted no time making his presence felt. In the 16th minute, he opened the scoring with a brilliant solo effort—twisting and turning past his marker before driving the ball into the bottom right corner, leaving the Colorado Springs goalkeeper with no chance.
He struck again just before halftime, racing onto a perfectly timed through ball from teammate Noah Eile before calmly slotting home to double New York’s lead.
After the interval, Dennis Gjengaar made it 3-0 for the visitors, but the home side quickly responded with a goal from Anthony Fofana to give themselves a glimmer of hope. However, any thoughts of a comeback were dashed when Sean Nealis sealed the result late in the match with New York’s fourth goal.
Sofo’s influential display earned him high ratings across the board, culminating in the Man of the Match award. His pace, finishing, and creativity proved too much for the Switchbacks’ backline to handle.
Fellow Ghanaian Ronald Donkor also featured prominently for the Red Bulls, completing the full 90 minutes in a commanding team performance.
