The Moroccan Football Federation has announced plans to formally ask the Confederation of African Football to postpone the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which is scheduled to be hosted by Morocco.

The women’s continental tournament is expected to take place between March 17 and April 3, 2026, with 16 countries set to compete for the title. However, Morocco says the current schedule clashes with several major football commitments in the country.

According to the Moroccan FA, one of the main concerns is the need to complete the domestic league on time, as the country prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The federation also wants to focus fully on preparations for the men’s national team, the Atlas Lions, ahead of the global tournament to be staged in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will be historic, as it is the first time 16 teams will participate. Egypt, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Mali have been included after failing to qualify automatically.

Nigeria head into the tournament as defending champions, having won the competition a record ten times, and will be aiming to retain their crown in Morocco.

Ghana’s Black Queens have been drawn in Group D, where they will face Cameroon, Mali, and Cape Verde.

CAF is yet to officially respond to Morocco’s request, but a decision is expected in the coming weeks as preparations for the tournament continue.
